Do you know who Anita Sarkeesian is? How about Feminist Frequency? If you answered no to either, I humbly ask you to educate yourself. Anita wanted to analyze and deconstruct common tropes and stereotypes of female characters in games. Don’t know of any? Oh c’mon… they exist as the “sexy sidekick” or “background decoration”… “man with boobs” or “the fighting f#@k toy”. Ring a bell now?
She launched a kickstarter, asking for $6,000 to do a series of videos on these topics, She reached that funding within 24 hours and over the following month, ended up raising nearly $160,000! And during that fundraising until now, Anita has been besieged (and that’s a fucking understatement) by people who… and wrap your head around this one… didn’t want her to make a handful of feminist videos.
VIDEOS!
Are you fucking kidding me?
As a female gamer, I’ve had a few brushes with misogyny. Like the guy who took my character sheet from me at a D&D session to tell me “what the best course of attack” was and the pissed-off online player who repeatedly insisted I was a “stupid, lucky bitch” because I schooled his ass in an online fighting game. But I have never, NEVER seen the level of hate that’s been flung at Sarkeesian. Never. It’s epic and not in the hyperbolic way. I mean, an online game where you click on her face so you can beat her up? It makes me ragey but ultimately it makes me sad that this faceless online mob wants to intimidate her into STFU because she wanted to make videos.
I pledged proudly to her kickstarter and I wish I could sent more.
I promoted it via GeekGirlCon.
I will continue to be a supporter of Feminist Frequency and Anita.
Her work is important and even if you don’t agree with it, she has a right to speak her mind like I am now.
